FASHION ICON: Iris Apfel

91 year old Iris Apfel refers to herself as a "Rare Bird of Fashion", and that is definitely a good thing. While she is best known for her over-the-top style and large-framed glasses, this lady has over 70 years of experience in the fashion industry.

Iris is a socialite, fashion icon, interior designer, and businesswoman. She has been the subject of a string of fashion exhibits in museums, coffee table books, and even an entire fashion campaign was based on her trademark style. Iris is continuously showing the world that age ain't nothing but a number, because there is no stopping her.
What I love so much about Iris is not only that she is her own stylist, but that she has been happily married to Carl Apfel since 1948 (whoa!). Iris has established herself as one of fashion's darlings, all without compromising her individuality or humour. Iris is known to be a great storyteller, and it has been said that there isn't an outfit that she doesn't have a story to go with.
Iris' secret weapon: "When you don’t dress like everybody else, you don’t have to think like everybody else.”
AMEN sister, AMEN!

If I had one fashion wish...

It would be to own a piece from Balmain's collection.

Balmain is a fashion house that was founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945, and it was first known for its elegant and super feminine style. However, the fashion house was reinvented in recent years when Christophe Descarnin came on board as head designer. Descarnin made Balmain coveted for it's new edgy, sexy, yet glamorous creations.  Why I love Balmain so much is that it reminds me alot of my favourite pop star of all time, Michael Jackson; the strong shoulder pads, excessive amounts of sequence and studs, as well as its 1980\s inspiration. Michael Jackson was seen wearing Balmain quite often in his last years, and it comes as no surprise that Descarnin stated he was a big fan of MJ and much of his designs were inspired by the late and great Jackson.

I definitely don't think that Balmain is suitable for everyone; only those who are confident and don't mind being the centre of attention. ("me! me! me!" *ahem*)

*In 2011, Descarnin stepped down as head designer and much to a surprise, 25 year old pattern-maker, Olivier Rousteing took the reigns. Rousteing has definitely succeeded in maintaining the image of Balmain in my opinion. I look forward to seeing what's next for the fashion house...and one day...owning my own piece of Paris!
